North Texas

Welcome

Stakeholders in the North Texas region work collectively to create seamless mathematics pathways aligned across institutions for all P–16 learners. Key leaders from regional community colleges and universities serve as a leadership team to work with the Dana Center Mathematics Pathways (DCMP) regional coordinator to address shared issues, and to problem–solve across systems with a goal of improving student completion.

“As educators, we understand that a strong foundation in collegiate mathematics empowers students to excel as learners and to transform their lives. Yet, for many students, the postsecondary mathematics requirement, as currently designed, is the greatest barrier on the path to completing their education. We can do better. And we will.”

Goals and Activities

In the 2017–2018 academic year, stakeholders in the North Texas region are focused on achieving the following goals:

  1. Co–Requisite Mathematics – Engage mathematics faculty in effective strategies for implementing co–requisite remediation models;
  2. Advising – Identify best practice in advising and communication strategies to support mathematics pathways; and
  3. Mathematics Transferability – Engage university partners in seeking solutions for improved consistency in mathematics coursework transferability into specific programs and majors.

These goals build on the previous North Texas region’s activities, having emerged from collaborative planning across institutions during Spring and Summer of 2017. The emphasis of the North Texas region is on moving to action via recommendations or white papers in order to share and support implementation of best practice in the areas of co–requisite mathematics, advising, and mathematics transferability.

Highlights from the Region

  • 2017 Regional Convenings and Meetings

In June 2017, Tarrant County College–Southeast Campus hosted the first regional convening for the DCMP North Texas region.

This meeting provided:

  • An overview of the DCMP principles and goals
  • An update on Texas House Bill 2223: Relating to developmental coursework offered by public institutions of higher education under the Texas Success Initiative (HB 2223)
  • A focused discussion with faculty members, instructional and student services leaders, and university partners in:
    • Advising implications of mathematics pathway reform
    • Co–requisite remediation

In Fall 2016, representatives from the North Texas region held an organizational and priority setting meeting at the Corinth Campus of North Central Texas College, where community college representatives from the area identified the key reform efforts related to the DCMP principles.

Michael Endy
“The initial meeting was exciting for me as we learned about what other institutions are doing and how much we have in common as we approach the challenges of facilitating student success in math. There is great promise here and I am eager to see the day we can look back on that first meeting and realize how far we've journeyed together.”
